By adding the Battery Backup, your tank is insulated from power interruptions, helping protect your valuable investment -and your tank inhabitants.
*Hours are estimated and will vary depending on battery life, pump mode, and other factors.
Cost Savings
Traditional AC pumps, when used as a return pump for your sump, are flow controlled through the use of a choke valve. This method of control is inherently inefficient for two reasons. 1) The AC pump purchased must often be overpowered for your given setup to allow for flexibility. 2) By adding artificial impedance to your flow, electricity is wasted. The Vectra pump will always operate at the optimum efficiency because there is no need to use a flow restricting valve to achieve your desired flow rate.

Vectra L2 Expert Buying Guide
The EcoTech Marine Vectra L2 is a controllable DC pump intended for large-display return systems and closed-loop circulation. Its published maximum flow is 3,100 GPH, while its maximum head height is 21.5 feet. Those two limits define the pump’s operating envelope, but they should not be treated as simultaneous performance figures: 3,100 GPH is the maximum-flow specification, and 21.5 feet is the maximum-head specification. For a demanding installation, the relevant question is not simply whether the pump can move 3,100 GPH. It is whether the L2 can provide the desired turnover after accounting for the vertical rise and resistance created by the complete plumbing path.
Head-loss planning is especially important when the L2 is used as a sump return. Begin with the vertical distance the pump must overcome, then consider the additional resistance imposed by the plumbing layout. Long pipe routes, fittings, valves, manifolds, and other restrictions affect delivered flow even though the source does not provide an intermediate flow curve for quantifying each configuration. The 21.5-foot maximum head rating should therefore be viewed as a boundary rather than a target operating point. Because actual flow depends on the installation, avoid selecting or tuning the pump from the 3,100 GPH figure alone. The L2’s adjustable output allows final flow to be set after the system is assembled and operating.
The pump uses a 1.5-inch, or 38 mm, input fitting and a 1.25-inch, or 31.75 mm, output fitting. Both are compatible with standard PVC pipe, and EcoTech includes input and output QuickCouple components. For a high-flow return layout, these connection sizes should be incorporated into the plan before the sump, stand, or hard plumbing is finalized. The QuickCouple fittings are intended to simplify installation, adjustment, cleaning, and disassembly. The pump’s volute can also be rotated, allowing the outlet orientation to adapt to the plumbing arrangement rather than requiring every pipe run to conform to a fixed pump position.
Physical placement deserves the same attention as hydraulic capacity. The L2 has a listed footprint of 5 inches long by 8.5 inches wide, so the pump chamber or external equipment area needs enough room for the body and its connections. The sealed motor and magnetic-drive design support either submersible installation or inline external operation. This makes the L2 adaptable to conventional sump chambers, external return-pump layouts, and closed-loop systems. When planning the space, retain practical access to the QuickCouple connections and pump body; the maintenance advantages of quick disassembly are reduced if surrounding equipment or rigid plumbing prevents the pump from being removed.
Return Pump configuration is intended for moving water between a sump and display. In this configuration, the Vectra driver provides calibration and Speed Lock features in addition to adjustable output and Feed Mode. This is the appropriate operating configuration when stable sump-to-display transfer is the priority. The pump’s controllable DC operation also means the desired return rate can be set through pump speed instead of relying solely on a flow-restricting choke valve. EcoTech describes this approach as avoiding the artificial impedance and wasted electricity associated with controlling an oversized fixed-speed AC pump by throttling its outlet.
Closed Loop configuration changes the L2 from a conventional return pump into a circulation source. In a closed loop, the pump can use random and pulsing EcoSmart modes rather than only providing steady sump return flow. This distinction matters because return flow and in-display circulation perform different jobs. A return installation must contend with the elevation and plumbing path between sump and display, while a closed loop recirculates water through its dedicated plumbing. The L2 is explicitly designed for either application, but the driver should be placed in the correct operational configuration so the available control features match the system’s purpose.
For a large display, deciding between return and closed-loop duty should begin with the intended flow path. If the pump must lift water from a sump, evaluate the route against the 21.5-foot maximum-head specification and leave room to tune the final output. If the pump will operate on a closed loop, plan around the dedicated intake and return plumbing and decide whether random or pulsing flow is useful for the display. The same L2 pump can serve either role, but the source does not state that one unit should perform both roles simultaneously. Each installation should be configured around one of the driver’s two distinct operating arrangements.
Control is available locally through the included Vectra QuietDrive driver and wirelessly through EcoTech’s Mobius app. The L2 is Mobius-ready and can connect directly to a compatible iOS or Android device without additional equipment for Mobius programming. The app provides access to pump programming and operational features, while the driver allows selection between Return Pump and Closed Loop configurations. Systems using Neptune Apex can also integrate compatible EcoTech and AquaIllumination equipment through the MXM module and Apex Fusion. MXM compatibility is an integration option; it does not change the L2’s published hydraulic specifications.
QuietDrive technology is incorporated into the Vectra driver to minimize DC motor noise. This can be relevant for large displays located near living or working areas, but installation still deserves careful attention because the source does not provide a measured sound level for the L2. The pump is fully adjustable, allowing the aquarist to balance desired return or circulation flow against the needs of the plumbing arrangement. Rather than assuming maximum speed is appropriate, calibrate and tune the pump for the actual system. The maximum-flow specification identifies available capacity, not a requirement to operate continuously at full output.
The Vectra L2 is compatible with EcoTech’s Battery Backup. This can provide pump operation during a power interruption, although the Battery Backup is not listed among the included components. EcoTech notes that backup duration is estimated and varies with battery life, pump mode, and other factors, so the source does not support a fixed runtime claim for the L2. For outage planning, compatibility should be treated as one part of a broader redundancy strategy rather than as a guaranteed number of operating hours. The selected mode and pump demand can affect how long a battery-supported configuration remains active.
Routine maintenance is supported by the included QuickCouple fittings, rotatable volute, and quick-disassembly design. These features allow the pump to be disconnected for cleaning and repositioning without making its placement permanent within the plumbing layout. Before installation, make sure the pump and couplers remain accessible rather than burying them behind other sump equipment. The source does not prescribe a cleaning interval or cleaning solution, so maintenance frequency should follow the condition of the system and the included instructional manual. After servicing, confirm that the input and output QuickCouple connections are correctly reassembled and that the pump is returned to the intended Return Pump or Closed Loop configuration.
The supplied record gives detailed specifications for the L2 but does not provide M2 flow, head, fitting, footprint, or power data. A numerical L2-versus-M2 comparison therefore cannot be made from this source alone. What can be established is that the L2 provides up to 3,100 GPH, up to 21.5 feet of head, a 1.5-inch input, a 1.25-inch output, and a 150-watt power supply. Aquarists comparing it with an M2 should compare those L2 values against the documented M2 specifications and the calculated needs of the actual plumbing. The decision should be based on required delivered flow and head-loss margin, not model naming alone.
The package includes one Vectra L2 Mobius Ready DC pump, one Vectra QuietDrive driver, a driver mounting bracket, a 150-watt power supply, input and output QuickCouplers, and an instructional manual. The mounting bracket gives the driver a defined installation point rather than leaving it loose around the sump area. Taken together, the L2 is best evaluated as a configurable pump platform for demanding return or closed-loop plumbing: it offers substantial published flow and head limits, internal or external placement, adaptable connection orientation, two distinct operating configurations, Mobius programming, optional MXM integration, and Battery Backup compatibility. Final suitability still depends on the system’s actual plumbing resistance and intended operating flow.
