Pom Pom Gracilaria Macroalgae - Reef Genetics
Pom Pom Gracilaria Macroalgae - Reef Genetics
Pom Pom Gracilaria is a fast-growing red macroalga that holds together in dense, manageable clumps. Its pom-pom growth makes it easier to harvest than loose or fragmenting species, while its soft branches provide fresh forage and pod habitat. It actively uses nitrate, phosphate, and dissolved nutrients as it grows.

Why keep Pom Pom Gracilaria?
- Fast growth supports effective nutrient export with regular harvesting.
- Dense clumps are easy to handle and resist breaking into nuisance fragments.
- Provides a complex refuge for pods and beneficial microorganisms.
- Produces nutritious fresh forage for tangs, rabbitfish, angelfish, and other grazers.
Lighting, flow, and nutrients
Use moderate-to-strong light and broad moderate-to-high flow. A gentle tumble exposes every side, prevents detritus from packing into the clump, and promotes even growth. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable. The algae is naturally resistant to biofouling, but no macro remains clean when circulation is poor.
Refugium or display tank?
A refugium offers the best combination of growth, harvesting, and protection from fish. Pom Pom can also be secured in a macroalgae display. In a reef display with tangs or rabbitfish, expect grazing and keep a protected parent clump elsewhere if you want a renewable culture.
Harvesting and pruning
Remove one-third to one-half when the clump fills its chamber or shades its center. Keep a clean firm portion as the parent culture. Harvesting physically removes the nutrients stored in the tissue. Feed clean trimmings to herbivores or dispose of them; never release aquarium algae into natural water.
Troubleshooting Pom Pom Gracilaria
A dark or dirty center means the clump is too dense or flow is bypassing it. Pale tissue can indicate light shock, nutrient starvation, or unstable salinity. Thin, weak growth may need more light or trace availability. Test first, then change one factor at a time rather than adding multiple supplements.
How Pom Pom Gracilaria compares
Red Ogo has looser, softer branches and is especially popular as fish food. Pom Pom stays in tidier clumps and is simpler to harvest. Chaeto is nonpalatable and remains the lowest-risk pure refugium workhorse, while Pom Pom adds red color and feeding value.
Portion sizes, shipping, and acclimation
Choose a Golf Ball starter portion or a larger Tennis Ball portion. Natural shape and shade vary. Temperature-acclimate the sealed bag, rinse the algae in discarded tank water, inspect it, and begin under reduced light. Expand the photoperiod or intensity only after the clump looks firm and stable.
