Battery Backup Compatible
In an aquarium with no flow, fish and corals begin to die in as little as 4 to 10 hours. The Battery Backup is reef tank insurance in an aluminum housing.
By adding the Battery Backup, your tank is insulated from power interruptions, helping protect your valuable investment -and your tank inhabitants.
*Hours are estimated and will vary depending on battery life, pump mode, and other factors.
Cost Savings
Traditional AC pumps, when used as a return pump for your sump, are flow controlled through the use of a choke valve. This method of control is inherently inefficient for two reasons. 1) The AC pump purchased must often be overpowered for your given setup to allow for flexibility. 2) By adding artificial impedance to your flow, electricity is wasted. The Vectra pump will always operate at the optimum efficiency because there is no need to use a flow restricting valve to achieve your desired flow rate.

Vectra S2 Expert Buying Guide
The EcoTech Marine Vectra S2 is a controllable DC pump intended for compact sump-return systems and dedicated closed loops. Its published maximum flow is 1,400 GPH, with a maximum head height of 11.5 feet. Those limits make it most relevant when the plumbing plan calls for moderate rather than very high return volume, but they should not be treated as simultaneous operating figures. Actual return flow will fall as the pump works against vertical lift and plumbing resistance. The S2 is therefore best selected from the requirements of the installed return path rather than from aquarium volume alone.
Head-pressure planning is especially important with a pump in this output class. Start with the vertical rise from the sump operating level to the return outlet, then account for the resistance created by the rest of the route, including pipe, fittings, valves, manifolds, and any connected equipment. The source provides the 1,400 GPH maximum-flow and 11.5-foot maximum-head endpoints, but it does not include a complete flow curve or flow figures at intermediate head levels. Do not assume that the S2 will deliver 1,400 GPH at the display simply because the total vertical rise is below 11.5 feet.
For a lower-flow sump, define the return rate you actually want after head loss rather than selecting a pump solely to maximize turnover. The Vectra driver provides fully adjustable flow, while return-pump mode adds calibration and Speed Lock. This gives the aquarist a way to tune the S2 to the installed overflow and drain system without relying on a choke valve as the primary means of control. EcoTech contrasts this with traditional AC-pump installations that reduce flow by adding artificial restriction. A valve may still be useful for plumbing isolation or service planning, but the supplied information presents electronic speed adjustment as the method for setting normal flow.
The pump body has a published footprint of 3.8 inches long by 6.5 inches wide. That dimension should be checked against the actual return chamber or equipment area before plumbing is assembled. Leave additional working room around the pump for its QuickCouple fittings, the selected pipe orientation, and removal during cleaning; the footprint alone does not describe the clearance required for connected plumbing. The sealed motor and magnetic-drive design permit either submersible or external inline operation. This flexibility is useful when a compact sump chamber cannot comfortably hold both the pump and the space needed to disconnect it.
Plumbing connections are a 1-inch, or 25 mm, input and a 0.75-inch, or 19 mm, output. Both supplied fittings are compatible with standard PVC pipe. EcoTech includes an input Quick Coupler and an output Quick Coupler, allowing the pump to be separated from the attached plumbing for cleaning, inspection, or adjustment. The volute can also be rotated so the ports better match the sump and return-line layout. Plan that orientation before permanently assembling the PVC; a direct route can simplify installation and avoid forcing the pump into an awkward position simply to meet fixed pipework.
The S2 has two distinct operating configurations, and the correct one should be selected for the hydraulic role. Return Pump configuration is intended for movement between a sump and display and provides calibration and Speed Lock. Closed Loop configuration provides random and pulsing EcoSmart modes. These are operational alternatives rather than two jobs the same pump should be expected to perform at once. A sump-return installation generally benefits from a deliberately set, repeatable rate, while a dedicated closed loop can use changing flow patterns without changing the water level relationship between a display and sump.
Closed-loop use can be either inline or submersible because the Vectra has a sealed motor. In this application, the S2 can provide the random and pulsing modes associated with EcoTech’s EcoSmart control options. The source does not provide rules for intake-screen design, the number or size of loop outlets, or a tank-size recommendation. Those details must therefore be planned around the aquarium and livestock independently. Before choosing the S2 for a loop, verify that the required flow remains within its 1,400 GPH maximum and that the complete plumbing route does not approach its 11.5-foot maximum-head boundary.
Control is handled by the included Vectra QuietDrive driver. It allows selection between Return Pump and Closed Loop configurations, provides adjustable speed and Feed Mode, and uses QuietDrive technology to minimize DC motor noise. Mobius compatibility is built in, so wireless programming does not require additional EcoTech bridge equipment. The pump can connect directly to a compatible iOS or Android device running Mobius. Aquarists already using Neptune Systems can also integrate the S2 through MXM, placing supported EcoTech and AI equipment under Apex and Apex Fusion control. The MXM itself is not listed among the included components.
EcoTech Battery Backup compatibility is also stated for the Vectra S2. This can keep the pump available during a power interruption, but the source does not specify an S2 runtime, reduced-flow behavior, or the number of pumps supported by a battery. EcoTech notes that backup hours are estimates and vary with battery life, pump mode, and other factors. Treat the feature as compatibility rather than a guaranteed duration. For outage planning, the aquarist should decide whether continued sump circulation or another source of aquarium flow is the priority and configure the backup strategy accordingly.
Routine service should be considered while choosing the pump location. The QuickCouple components are intended to speed disassembly, while the rotatable volute can help keep the pump accessible instead of buried behind rigid plumbing. Position the driver using the included mounting bracket rather than leaving it loose around the sump area, and allow access to the pump body for cleaning and impeller inspection. The source does not prescribe a cleaning interval, so maintenance frequency should be based on the individual system and observed buildup. After reassembly, confirm that the couplers and plumbing are secure before returning the pump to normal operation.
The supplied record does not provide Vectra M2 specifications, dimensions, fittings, maximum flow, maximum head, or power requirements, so a numerical S2-versus-M2 comparison cannot be supported here. The defensible way to choose the S2 is to compare its known limits and footprint with the planned system. Select it when a 1,400 GPH maximum, an 11.5-foot maximum head, 1-inch inlet, 0.75-inch outlet, and 3.8-by-6.5-inch pump footprint fit the design with suitable operating margin. If the corrected flow requirement exceeds what the S2 can provide, consult the M2’s separate published data before moving up.
The package contains the Vectra S2 Mobius Ready DC pump, QuietDrive driver, driver mounting bracket, 72W power supply, input Quick Coupler, output Quick Coupler, and instructional manual. This is a focused option for an aquarist who wants a compact, adjustable return or closed-loop pump with removable PVC connections and multiple control paths. Its suitability ultimately depends on the installed head pressure and available service clearance, not just the headline flow rating. Measure the equipment area, map the plumbing, choose the operating configuration, and establish the desired delivered flow before committing to the final installation.
