Magnesium matters in a reef aquarium: Hanna notes that it allows calcium and carbonate to stay bioavailable for corals and invertebrates. Keeping an eye on it helps you keep your reef chemistry balanced. Hanna designed the Marine Magnesium Checker HC as a more accurate alternative to chemical test kits, with a digital result in a few easy steps.
Why Choose the Hanna Magnesium Checker?
- Range: 1,000 to 1,800 ppm magnesium
- Fewer steps than other chemical tests
- Color-coded syringes keep the procedure simple
- Dedicated to a single parameter: this Hanna Checker measures magnesium only
- Small size for convenient use and storage
- Ideal for saltwater aquariums, marine, and aquaculture applications
Tips for Accurate Readings
Good technique makes a real difference with any colorimeter. Follow these tips each time you test:
- Measure volumes correctly. Draw up the syringe plunger until its bottom seal sits at the desired volume mark. Do not raise the liquid to the mark, as this gives a false high volume. An air gap between the plunger and the liquid is normal.
- Keep everything clean and dry. Use clean, dry cuvettes and syringes/tips. Rinse with deionized (RODI) water only, never with tank water, and dry the cuvettes before use to prevent dilution.
- Use a clean sample. Make sure the sample does not contain any debris.
- Handle cuvettes carefully. Whenever a cuvette goes into the checker, the outside must be dry and free of fingerprints, oil, and dirt. Wipe it thoroughly with the HI731318 microfiber cleaning cloth or a lint-free cloth first.
- Avoid bubbles. Shaking the cuvette can create bubbles that cause higher readings. Remove them by swirling or gently tapping the cuvette.
- Read promptly. Do not let the reacted sample stand too long after adding reagent, as accuracy will be affected.
- Discard samples right away. Empty the cuvette immediately after the reading, or the glass may become permanently stained.
- Keep sets together. Keep tips with their matching syringes during measurement, and clean the syringes and tips before storage.
