HYDROS Water Level Sensor: An Easy and Accurate Way to Monitor Your Water Level!
The HYDROS Water Level Sensor contains no moving parts that can fail. It’s extremely tiny: it’s a little over a half-inch thick with a circumference the size of a US penny. The optical eye is magnetically coupled with the magnet side measuring only ¼” thick. It can be mounted to most clear, tinted, or painted surfaces up to ½” thick. The sensor operates in the daytime or complete darkness so it’s safe for use hidden inside your aquarium stand or in the back chambers of an all-in-one aquarium. The sensor is easy to place, easy to move, and easy to clean. The sensor connects with any HYDROS Sense Port using an aviation-style plug for safe operation. No additional power source is needed to run the sensor.
HYDROS DC Micro Pump: Controlled and Powered by HYDROS to Top-Off Your Tank!
The HYDROS DC Micro Pump is powerful despite its small size. The pump measures 1.57” L x 1.46” W x 1.5” H. The pump has a maximum head pressure of 6’. The flow rate of the pump is 50 gallons per hour. This 12V brushless pump draws a maximum of 5W and has an average life expectancy of 30,000 hours (over 3 years). When connected to a Drive Port on the HYDROS Control X2 or Control X4, the controller will supply power to the pump so no additional cords or power bricks are required for operation. Using a HYDROS aquarium controller for your auto top-off system is not only a reliable solution but it also helps clear wire clutter in and around your aquarium.
HYDROS Triple Optical Aquarium Auto Top Off Guide
The HYDROS Triple Optical ATO Kit turns a compatible HYDROS controller into an aquarium auto top off system. It combines a three-point optical water-level sensor with a 12V DC micro pump, tubing, hang-on mount and siphon break so the controller can replace evaporated water without adding another power brick.
What the kit includes
- Triple optical water-level sensor for a compatible HYDROS Sense Port.
- HYDROS DC micro pump for a compatible Drive Port.
- Hang-on tubing mount, 80 inches of tubing and a siphon break.
The included pump is rated for up to 50 gallons per hour with up to 6 feet of head pressure. Actual delivery depends on tubing length, lift height and installation. The pump is intended to move fresh top-off water; do not use it for abrasive liquids or liquids that are incompatible with the pump.
Controller and port compatibility
The current kit instructions identify the HYDROS Control X2 and Control X4 as compatible examples because they provide the required Sense and Drive connections. Before purchase, verify that the planned HYDROS device has one available compatible Sense Port for the optical sensor and one available Drive Port for the pump.
Safer ATO placement
- Mount the optical sensor where the aquarium or sump maintains its normal operating water level.
- Place the freshwater reservoir and pump where a leak cannot drain into electrical equipment.
- Route the outlet tubing above the reservoir's maximum water line and install the included siphon break.
- Set conservative maximum run-time and alert rules in HYDROS before enabling unattended operation.
- Test normal fill, low-reservoir and sensor-fault behavior while observing the system.
Why three optical sensing points help
Multiple optical points give the controller more water-level information than a single switch. That supports more deliberate operating and safety rules, but no sensor replaces correct mounting, run-time limits and routine testing. Keep the optical surfaces clean because salt creep, algae and mineral deposits can interfere with readings.

Where should the HYDROS ATO sensor be placed?
Place it in the return section of a sump or another chamber where evaporation causes the water level to change. Do not place it in a chamber with a fixed water level.
Why does an aquarium ATO need a siphon break?
A siphon can continue moving water after the pump stops. Correct tubing placement and the included siphon break help prevent uncontrolled flow from the reservoir.
How often should the sensor and pump be cleaned?
Inspect them during regular aquarium maintenance. Clean the optical surfaces and pump whenever deposits, algae or reduced flow appear, then test the complete ATO before returning it to unattended service.
