How to Use Chemi Clean in a Cyano Reef Tank

1. Increase aquarium oxygen levels using heavy aeration or a large air stone.
2. Turn off any UV sterilizers and ozonizers, and remove any Chemi-pure or carbon during treatment. Keep your protein skimmer running, although it may need adjustment or removal of the collection cup to prevent excessive overflow. Maintain normal water flow with pumps and powerheads.
3. Add one scoop of Chemi Clean per 10 gallons of aquarium water.
4. Allow up to 48 hours for treatment. After the 48-hour treatment period, perform a 20% water change.
5. Turn your UV sterilizers and ozonizers back on, and replace the Chemi-pure or carbon you removed with new media.

Managing Your Protein Skimmer During Treatment

It is very common for protein skimmers to over-skim for a period of time during and after treatment, which is normal. Monitor the skimmer cup and remove any collected skimmate so it does not drain back into your aquarium. If your skimmer is overflowing too fast, try restricting the air supply feeding the skimmer to reduce the amount of bubbles formed, or physically raise the skimmer body for faster draining and drier skimmate. Replace any removed water with freshly mixed saltwater.

Note: When using Chemi Clean it is very important to monitor oxygen and pH levels within the aquarium. We suggest pointing a powerhead or air stone at the surface of the aquarium to maximize gas exchange. Failure to do so can cause low oxygen levels in the aquarium.
